What is Trivia Crack and why are 100m people playing it?

The mobile gaming world has had its fair share of addictive games such as, Angry Birds, Draw Something, Candy Crush and Flappy Bird. Another game along the same lines called Trivia Crack has just launched in the UK and there are already 100,000 users downloading the app.

The app is a trivia game the more questions the users answer the more characters they unlock. The questions are categorised in to sports, entertainment, art, science, history and geography. The app is free to purchase however, has been sponsored by many advertisements. Users have to buy coins to get more lives, or just wait for a time period.

From this article I believe that the game is a good idea as it is also educating people and it is the craze right now.

Reddit and Blogger tighten up rules on pornography

This article speaks about sites such as Reddit and Blogger are no longer going to advertise or show pornography on their websites, this will include nudes and where people are quoted as saying it is seen as sex crime. In where hackers can no longer hack and they are no longer promoting child porn.
From this article I believe they are doing the right thing as they would now be perceived as doing a positive thing and being ethical.

Snapchat adds entertainment and news with Discover

This article speaks about how Snapchat have included an entertainment section on their app where you can now look at the latest entertainment apps such as MTV, CNN and ESPN. They want to show that they are sort of including a magazine side to their app and that they are expanding in which their news sites will be updated every 24 hours.

From this article I believe what snapchat have included is benefitial to me as I can now look at the news while I am on snapchat and I can look at stuff such as the sports section which I have an interest in.

Instagram goes beyond photographs to hire journalists

This article speaks about how Instagram have now hired journalists to go beyond the point of the images and so they can then talk about the messages by behind the photos.

“Anyone who applies for these jobs is being hired to promote Instagram. Nothing more, nothing less. If that sounds like fun to you, then have at it. On the bright side, like advertising, it probably pays more than journalism”. is a quote from one of the executives of instagram

From this article I believe that it is not needed with this idea that they are trying to implement as Instagram is mainly to do with pictures and with this new idea they are going off the topic of instagram.

Three Chelsea fans in Paris Métro video suspended from entering ground

This article speaks about how three Chelsea fans were banned from entering PSG's home ground due to being caught on camera saying racist stuff. Also from this video it was seen that they did not let a black person get on the train and also were saying chants such as we are racists. All this was recorded and then put on social media sites such as YouTube and Twitter where it then went viral and as a result people were able to see the actual faces of the guilty people.
From this article I believe that the use of social media has been used at good affect as many people heard of it and was then seen on the news and it was a good use of user generated content

Karen Danczuk: Councillor posts selfies for her 35.8k Twitter fans, in pictures

This article speaks about how a councilor of Kingston has been posting 'explicit' selfies on social media and has gained many retweets and favourites. Her husband is also a labour politician.
I believe from this article what she is doing is wrong as councilors are meant to set example for the public and this is what she is not doing as she is showing what she is doing is fine and anyone can do it. This relates to the point of mulvey and the male gaze where women are seen as oversexualised. But on the other side you can see she may be doing so to gain awareness of herself so she becomes more popular.

Facebook ‘legacy contact’ can take over your account when you die

This article speaks about how when someone dies on their Facebook, Facebook have created a thing called legacy contact where their account can still get updated when they die by a loved one. This is because Facebook has realized that many people are dying on the site and nothing is being done to change their accounts as most of the time they are deleted. Only one person can be in the legacy contact also.
From this article I believe it is unnecessary the idea that Facebook have included as when someone dies then they die, I see no point in updated their profile because it is not them that are making the posts or uploading the pictures, I believe it is a waste of time.

No More Page 3

1) Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?

The campaign started in the summer when Lucy Holmes found she couldn't stop thinking about the fact that the largest female image in The Sun was of a young woman showing her breasts for men, even though Jessica Ennis had just won her gold Olympic medal.

2) What are the six reasons the campaign gives for why Page 3 has to go?

  1. It is 2015, page 3 was made in the sexist times, 1970's.
  2. Soft porn, families can look at that.
  3. Bad teachings for children
  4. Women are known for doing better things in the world
  5. Showing that women are only needed for sexual needs
  6. The Sun could be better without page 3
3) Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?
Susan believes The Sun should have no more page 3 as she states that it is no longer the 1970's, does not help the sales of The Sun and how the sun decided to bring back page 3 because of the pressures.
Barbara spoke about there being worse things than page 3, whether it being up to the female themselves if they wanted to do page 3 or not, how people should do alternatives if they do not like page 3 or the sun also how some people would want page 3 and that the campaigns shouldn't speak for all.

4) How can the No More Page 3 campaign be linked to the idea of post-feminism?
It can be linked to post feminism as they are trying to get out of this feminism period by having no more page 3 and in which the campaigners believe it would link to post feminism if page 3 were to be no more as they would have got rid of one of the sexualised parts of women in the country.

5) What are your OWN views on the No More Page 3 campaign. Do you agree with the campaign's aims? Should the campaign continue?
I do not agree with the campaign of no more page 3 as I believe that it is up to the females who are doing the page 3 modelling whether they want to do it or not. It also may be their job at the end of the day and it is what they do for a living. As it has been stated that it was started in 1970's and for many years there have not been any problems with page 3 until now, so if this campaign did not create a big stir I believe many people would not have cared.

6) Do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?
There are reasons to why we are in a post feminism and still need for feminism. The reasons to why we are still in need for feminism is reasons such as women not quite being equal with men looking at jobs for e.g. where in the companies the biggest people such as directors are always mainly men. Also women are still over sexualised when looking at music videos where apart from the main female singers women are there to be looked at and nothing more. On the other hand an example of us being in post feminism is in wimbledon and tennis where women play less sets than men but still get paid the same winnings, this shows that is more bias towards women in this scenario but does show that there is no longer a need for feminism in this sport.

Media Magazine reading

2) What are the two texts the article focuses on?
The two texts that are focused on are Pan am and Beyonce's video why don't you love me?

3) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?
The examples from Pan am I have seen in the text was: "with a face like that you will find a husband in a couple of months" also "fragmented legs as they walk in unison through the airport". This is proof of male gaze as the first quote speaks about how their faces are very beautiful as they say they can get a husband in a couple of months so they are there to be looked at also the shot of the legs is also for them to be looked at by males predominately.
Within the second the text male gaze is shown numerous times where she objectifies herself to the camera by wearing tight clothes and not wearing much clothing and also with lyrics saying why don't you love me it is clear to see she is trying to catch someones attention and wants to be looked at.

4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?
I believe it is sexism in a different way as I believe these texts are reinforcing why feminism is needed as it is over sexualising women and linking to the male gaze in that they are being objectified and are only there to be looked at.

5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Feminism – A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men.

Post-feminism – An ideology in culture and society that society is somehow past needing feminism and that the attitudes and arguments of feminism are no longer needed.

Patriarchy – An ideology that places men in adominant position over women.

Post-colonialism

1) Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said
Alvarado spoke about there being 4 representations within the themes:

  • Exotic
  • Dangerous
  • Humorous
  • Pitied
Franz Fanon said that black people "putting on the white mask" when talking about representation of blacks in society. He spoke about infantilize, primitivilize, decivilize and essentialize.

Edward Said's challenges the concept or the the difference between the east and west. He spoke about the east and west being civilized and the uncivilized. Speaking about the concept of 'them and us' or 'theirs and ours'.

2) Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

I believe when you are talking about the main actor the woman shows a negative view of British Muslims as it is showing she doesn't respect her beliefs as it shows she has two lives which could portray how the people are today in the british muslim society. I believe it does reinforce Said's society as she is part of both societies in a way where she is part of the westernised community and also the eastern side where she goes to the pub but then also puts on a hijab. You could say she has no choice but to be like this to blend in with the british society.

Paddy Power courts controversy with 'sheikh' Premier League ad

This article speaks about how paddy power have made a new advert that has been seen as controversial as the advert contains people dressed up as sheikhs and also saying saying things relating to the sheikhs in which people could interpret in the wrong way.

From this article I believe they may have caused some controversy with what they have done but it is not meant to be taken seriously and is just a a bit of fun. Also within the article it speaks about how paddy power have made controversial adverts in the past so it is something they are known for doing. I know this as they are on my Twitter feed a lot and do come up with controversial tweets, however they may have taken it a bit far with the dialogue that appeared in the adverts and I can see why that may be seen as wrong.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's refusal to cut deal with West Ham over Emmanuel Adebayor stokes rivalry

This article speaks about how West Ham football club and Tottenham football club have had another argument, this time about Adebayor in where Tottenhams owner said they were not willing to pay any of Adebayor's wages especially as it is a London rival team. West Ham owner David Gold then took to Twitter to express his views on Tottenham and they were negative tweets such as “However, no matter how hard you try, there are people out there that you just can’t do business with.” in where he was talking about Tottenham.
I believe from this article that these two clubs don't like doing business together and they should not do so in the future, I also believe Gold should have kept their business private and not tweeted it to the whole world but you can see why he done so as he wanted to tell the West Ham fans how disappointed they are.

Russian lesbians stage selfie kiss plane protest

This article speaks about how two lesbian activists started kissing on a plane to to St Petersberg in front of the Russian who put together anti gay laws, Sen Milanov. As this happened the selfie of the two girls went viral in which they got more than a thousand likes. She also added more pictures after this and also caused 'problems' on the plane with her friend.
From this article I believe the two girls have done nothing really wrong and you could call it a silent protest as they used social media to their advantage and have gained worldwide coverage as a result. I doubt anything will change but it is clear from this article that people are trying to make a stop to this.
