Boy, 15, arrested over alleged racist tweet aimed at Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck

This article speaks about how a 15 year old boy has been arrested after allegedly tweeting a racist tweet at Arsenal footballer Danny Welbeck after he scored against his former team Manchester United. I believe this is a step in the right direction as it shows you can not tweet anything you want and get away with it and showing that he is 15 and has still been arrested shows it does not matter what age you something can still happen to you. As I said it is a step in the right direction but many people tweet racist abuse on Twitter and social media and this is one rare case that has been found and I believe there should be arrests being made similar to this case that has just happened.

Three judges removed and a fourth resigns for viewing pornography at work

This article speaks about how 3 judges lost their jobs and a further judge is set to resign after being caught watching pornography at work. This was caught by the IT as they saw them watching the pornography on their phone and as a result they have lost their jobs. I believe in my opinion this was the right thing to do as people at work should be doing this and definitely a judge should as they should be setting an example to everybody else.

Collective identity and the media

Collective identity

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'

The first section speaks about how people are seen as opposed to how people see them.

The second section speaks on how people used to be seen with the traditional side of things such as class, religion and gender.

The next section focuses on adverts and how people may change due to adverts and adverts target active and passive customers.

This section focuses on how people are seen as an individual in ways such as being seen as different and unique

The next section is all about image and how people want to see themselves and the brands people wear may reflect your image.

The final section speaks about how the internet may or may not have an affect on a persons image or what brands they would want to wear or not to wear.

2) List five brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.

Adidas - I play a lot of sports and my football boots are Adidas brand.
Superdry - I have a lot of clothing from Superdry
Nike - I have a lot of Nike clothing also and it represents who I am

3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?
I do agree that in modern media people care more about style as opposed to substance. There are many examples in modern media to prove this such as Kim Kardashian who is now seen as one of the biggest celebrities all over the world mainly to do with her style and the way she looks. Many people would not really care about her substance and what she has done to achieve this status of hers and links in with the saying don't judge a book by its cover.

5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?

I believe on Twitter this is the most accurate representation of me. The main reason is due to the family I now have on Facebook and Instagram in where if I say something controversial my family will then find out. On Twitter I believe I have more freedom to express myself in the way I really am.

6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?
I myself do not have a problem with data mining as I believe it is beneficial to me as if I see adds that relate to me I would want to look further. The only problem I would see is that it would be annoying but I would not see it as a privacy issue but more on the positive where we can benefit from this.

Feminism online

Emma Watson

Emma Watson made her speech at a special event called her for she campaign in which she has now become an ambassador for, in the speech she spoke about things such as her life as a female growing up where she was judged for being a female and went on to speak about other things such as her dad being a mother and father figure to her. Following on from this she spoke about how males also have problems when trying to come out as they always want to feel masculine and this too can be a problem. She then goes on to finish about joining this campaign and makes a plea to the audiences.

I believe this is a valid campaign as for one it is a famous celebrity who is the ambassador for this campaign, showing that she has taken time out of her busy schedule in order to make a change about the inequality of genders throughout the whole world. By having Emma Watson on board it would also give them a lot of publicity and also she is respected and is seen in the media for positives and not negatives.

Ched Evans

This article from The Telegraph spoke about how a feminist made an online petition against convicted rapist Ched Evans who is a professional footballer who was sent to prison for doing so. This online petition gained many signings with 160,000 in total and 21,000 in 24 hours. This then stopped a deal for Evans signing for Oldham football club as they no longer wanted to sign him after everything that has happened in the media whereas at first they had offered him a long term contract. Similarly the club Evans used to play for Sheffield United had him training at their club but they stopped him from training with them due to them also getting negative media coverage where the local people and fans were going against them.

This campaign is seen as valid and also a witch hunt. Valid is because people would not want to see Evans back playing football because what he had done is unforgivable and disgraceful especially as footballers are seen as role models, also the fact that as I have already stated local people and fans would not want him at their clubs so would sign the petition also. It may be seen as a witch hunt as it could be said would Evans get the same treatment if he had done the same thing but in a different job not a footballer where they are talked about everyday in the media.

Freida Pinto: India should show banned BBC rape documentary

This article speaks about how a famous Indian actress said that a documentary that has been banned which was shown on the BBC should be shown in India. The video was about about girls being raped publicly in India and has gained a lot of public attention on social media.
From this article I believe what she has said is right as this documentary should be made aware in India as this is where the action has taken place and that the citizens of India should be made aware of what is going on in their country to ensure that change takes place.
